Instructions for a Fight consists of documentation of a rehearsal Autumn and Chelsea Knight took part in while preparing for a live performance at the New Museum in NYC in 2015. The piece is overlaid with the voice of our male instructor, who elevates our feeling of aggression and violence towards our goal: blurring the line between a real fight and a parallel space of play. Throughout the piece, what is alluded to but omitted is the boundary between physical and mental safety, which mirrors cultural illusions about both kinds of safe spaces. The piece is interested in the mimicry and language of violence.

Audre Lorde’s 1981 text “The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism” provides us with many insights about anger, namely “Anger is loaded with information and energy.” Knight + Knight's previous works addressed more latent, or below the surface aspects of anger in regards to psychoanalysis, feminism and racialized social structures. Manifest is a an exploration of what happens when latent sources of rage are made manifest, and therefore political. Chelsea Knight and Autumn Knight dive into this by using text, sound and expressions of both intimacy and aggression to create an environment to work through rage as a productive form of discourse.
